Hartford Hospital's Institute of Living (IOL) is one of America's leading not-for-profit centers for comprehensive patient care, research and education in the fields of behavioral, psychiatric and addiction disorders.

Research and education are important elements of The Institute's mission. The IOL has training programs in psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing and rehabilitation. As a research center, The IOL conducts clinical trials of investigational new drugs and is a leader in outcome studies.

Community commitment is strong at The IOL. As a South End fixture for over 175 years, The IOL is proud to contribute to the stability and strength of its immediate neighborhood and the city beyond.

As a member of the Southside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (SINA), The IOL has worked in collaboration with neighborhood organizations and city and state officials to improve housing and living conditions in the South End of Hartford.

• Founded in 1822, The Institute of Living was one of the first mental health centers in the United States, and the first hospital of any kind in Connecticut.
• Numerous trees on the grounds of The Institute represent rare or unusually large species, many dating back to the 1860s, when the grounds of The Institute were designed by noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
• For the past three years, rated in the Top 25 for Psychiatry in the Nation by US News & World Report
• First in state to offer NeuroStar TMS Therapy, a new, non-invasive treatment for patients with depression.
• IOL researchers made five presentations at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. The meeting took place in New Orleans, LA from May 22-26, 2010.
• Dr. David Tolin and the Anxiety Disorders Center is featured in VH1's "The OCD Project" which began airing in May, 2010.
• During October, 2009, John W. Goethe, M.D., Director of the Institute's Burlingame Center for Psychiatric Research and Education, lectured and supervised at hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengud, and Wuhan, China.
• The Institute has launched an ambitious, $3 million fundraising campaign for its Depression Initiative, a groundbreaking effort that will make the Institute a national center of excellence in mood and anxiety disorders.
• Renovations completed to Gengras and Donnelly Buildings. The renovations incorporate the hospital’s newly adopted, institution-wide interior design standards, which blend state-of-the-art functionality with classic designs.
• Researchers were awarded $7.2 million in research grants in fiscal year 2009. This is more than awarded in any previous year and represents a 44 percent increase over 2007.
• Awarded a $3.27 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The grant will allow us to double the size and staff of our Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center in the next two years.
