Mission Statement

To provide training and broad exposure in a range of healthcare and healthcare administration fields for college students who are from underrepresented and historically excluded groups in the health sciences.

Program Description

This is a paid 12-week summer undergraduate internship program providing participants with an introduction to the healthcare administration field as well as mentorship, career planning assistance and broad exposure to a wide variety of health careers within the Hartford HealthCare system.

What to Expect

The administrative undergraduate intern will gain exposure to the roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals throughout the Hartford Healthcare system with a focus on improving health and well-being throughout the state of Connecticut. This internship provides the opportunity to work closely with healthcare leaders on projects and assignments based on department needs and personal interests. Interns will be able to work alongside leaders in various aspects of our health equity department such as human resources, operations, innovation, informatics, employee wellness, strategic planning and business development, marketing and finance.

Our fully integrated health system includes seven hospitals, the state’s most extensive behavioral health network, a Bone & Joint Institute, a Cancer Institute, a Neurosciences Institute, a Heart & Vascular Institute, a large multispecialty physician group, a regional home care system, an array of senior care services, a large physical therapy and rehabilitation network and an accountable care organization.

Participant Eligibility

Adminstrative Internship undergrads
  • The program application is open to all qualifying undergraduate students. In addition, U.S.-based college students from underrepresented and historically excluded populations are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Examples of Underrepresented or Historically Excluded Groups: First generation; low-income or underserved rural community backgrounds; Black or African American; Hispanic or Latinx; Indigenous, Native American, or Alaska Native; Pacific Islander; Filipino, Hmong, or Vietnamese; LGBTQIA+; Individuals with disabilities; Veterans; and additional groups).

  • Interest in public health, health equity, business administration, human experience, or healthcare industry

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program

Program Benefits/Takeaways

  • Research activities: Participants will be assigned and complete a central project for the duration of their internship. Projects will be presented upon completion of the program.

How to I check on the status of my internship application?
Following the application deadline, applications will no longer be accepted, and submitted applications will be reviewed. Applicants will be notified of decisions via email by a date to be determined.

Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to apply for an internship at Hartford Healthcare?
Unfortunately, at this point, the Hartford Healthcare Early Careers Program is not able to sponsor international students

Placement: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Elizabeth is pursuing a double major in human health and African American studies. Her plan following is graduation is to pursue a master’s degree in public health (MPH). Elizabeth is deeply invested in improving the health of underrepresented and historically excluded groups. Specifically, Elizabeth is interested decreasing the maternal mortality rate among African American women.

Donessa is a rising senior majoring in Health and Human Biology. Donessa is passionate about both public health and biology, and hopes to pursue a dual MD/MPH degree. In her career, Donessa hopes to improve health equity through direct service to patients and advocating for equitable policies.

About her internship: "I chose HHC because I wanted to see what it was like to work in the health equity field from a variety of different perspectives. In my time I have had the opportunity to shadow various positions, network with graduate interns and fellows, and explore the different career options available to me at HHC."
